Our grand tour

Day 166: Franz-Josef-Glacier

This morning, fresh and adventurous we decided to have a proper look at a glacier. As Franz-Josef is bigger and on our route, that’s the one. Clouds were slowly building up and the forecast was awful. Nevertheless we hiked the two kilometers from the car park when it started drizzling.

You can get as close as 750m to the bottom of the ice. The rain even stopped for a while. All the ice, it’s really impressive!

As soon as we turned our back on the glacier and headed back, the sky opened and the glacier disappeared in the clouds. Weren’t we lucky – beside the fact that we arrived at the car wet.

It didn’t stop raining till the evening, but at a toilet stop we saw the rare Waka.

We stopped at a lovely little café for lunch and left our favorite green pack-away backpack behind 😭. I have to find a way to get it back!

This night we stayed in a hostel. No way we going to pitch the tent in the rain. Greymouth is as grey as its name.

Here a picture of a neat and tidy supermarket shelf, which you can find everywhere in NZ.
