Our grand tour

Day 290: Swakopmund to Uis

The plan (made around lunchtime the previous day): We drive past the moon landscape and the Welwitschia plants to Spitzkoppe where we have our lunch and go for a walk, then of to Uis at the Brandberg, where we can relax a bit at the campsite and explore the area.

Reality: We Leonards wake up at 8. Oh, I really enjoyed my bed! Then breakfast, pack our stuff, Anik does some maths and off we go into town. It’s quite chilly compared to the previous days and the sun hides behind clouds and mist. Swakopmund is like a fake town in the dessert. It’s so tidy and German with little shops and cafés, everyone speaks German. It’s weird. But you can’t spend much time as there’s not much to explore. We have some fish ‘n’ chips – the best on our tour so far, and head back, waiting for Enaeus. He finally shows up at 4 p.m.

Well, we have to change plans again. No moon landscape, no ancient plants, no Spitzkoppe. Straight to Uis and hope we get there before sunset, which we don’t manage at the end. So pitch the tents and cook dinner in the dark once again.
