The plan: We visit the Rock paintings at Brandberg then have lunch at the campsite so the boys can have a dip in the pool then head off to Tweifelfontain where you can find more rock paintings, a petrified forrest and basalt pillars. Camp there.Reality: It starts well, we get up have breakfast and head on to Brandberg, which by the way looks like an elephant footprint from space. We join a German/Swiss couple and a guide and walk the 40 minutes to the rock paintings. We see fresh leopard and porcupine poo, pass trees destroyed by elephants and see Agama lizards, dazzies and klip shiefers. The mountain looks burnt at some places because of the black basalt that must have got to the surface through gaps. The paintings themselves are up to 7000 years old and show the former rich wildlife in this area. We really enjoy this excursion. We also enjoy the rest at the campsite and the swim in the pool afterwards and are ready to head off, but the trailer isn’t ready yet. We have to wait once again but are in good spirits. We finally head off with another borrowed trailer, but at least we hit the road. Again not for long, then a kind of bang, a rattle. A burst tyre? Manageable. But it’s not a burst tyre…
So we stand at the side of the road – for hours. We watch the sunset, Anik sees a scorpion and patience gnaws on our nerves. Luckily the car breaks down near a house where helpful people live. Agnes eventually drives us in a pickup full of goat’s shit to a lodge/campsite in who knows where – but somewhere in the middle of nowhere. We’ll see where we are in daylight, but the campsite seems amazing. Just feels weird to be stranded without car and Eneaus isn’t here either.
