Our grand tour

Day 294: Etosha

No north, no cultural experience. We head straight to Etosha. It takes us longer then expected to reach the tarmac road, as we have to drive on off road tracks through deep sand, and rocky riverbeds, over stoney hills past little villages where we ask for further directions. A hitchhiker joins us for about 40 minutes to get from one somewhere in the middle of nowhere to somewhere else in the middle of nowhere. My back is in bits and we all cheer when we hit the tarmac road. In Kamanjab we stock up our food for the next two days and get to take some pictures with traditional Himba women. Oh, I feel so touristy.

Then we continue to the west gate of the famous Etosha National Park. On the way there we see giraffes, warthogs, baboons and springbocks. Getting all excited! As we don’t make it to Halali today we have to camp in Olifantrus which turns out to be far better. What a waterhole! Action all night long: elephants, a hyena, a jackal, even two rhinos (a mother with her child) and we just miss a male lion but hear him roaring.
