Today the car gets exchanged. That means for us we should move on and leave this beautiful spot with its beautiful people behind. We get the car for four extra days for free! So we don’t have to rush now. Hejti and Damann recommend a campsite just behind the border during a peanut butter jam snack at lunchtime. That means a two and a half to three hours drive if we want to include a game drive. That sounds perfect. We stock up our supplies in an almost empty supermarket and hit the road again.
Signposts on the way make us excited…
The border is just 10 km beyond Shakawe and right beyond the border is the turn off to Mahangu National Park. No gate, no fence… Just lots of animals. In about 90 minutes we see giraffes, elephants, impala, warthogs, springbocks and kudus. It is mind blowing and this time it really feels wild. A thousand year old baobab ttee is worth a little detour.
Just in time we reach the gate, but as it’s on the main road coming from the border we don’t have to pay. Maybe we don’t look like Safari tourist. We arrive at the campsite just before sunset and feel like being in another part of paradise. Right at the banks of the Okawango again.
(The black patches in the river are hippos!)
