Our grand tour

Day 314: a trip to Victoria Falls

First we wanted to stay at the Victoria Falls for a few nights, but as it was difficult to find decent accommodation we decide to do a day trip. Border crossing into Zimbabwe and an hour and a half drive gets us there at half nine. We need a second breakfast first before we go to the national park. Baboons and vervet monkeys run around and don’t seem to mind all the tourists. Tourist = food, so raid the bins….The falls are once again really impressive and we are glad to have come here. They are up to 108m high, 1,737 m wide and 1100 m³ of water fall over the edge per second. They count as one of the World Wonders and are a World Heritage Site too.We also take the chance to cross the bridge into Zambia, without and border hassle, as long as we don’t get off it. Hard to believe that I jumped off this bridge 21 years ago (111m!).On our way back to Kasane our driver gets a call that our night bus to Gaborone leaves two hours earlier than expected. That means we have to hurry. At the hostel I pack up the things and Bill tries to book accommodation in Gaborone. Unfortunately unsuccessfully due to log in problems with airbnb. But we make it to the bus with all our stuff, plenty of water and enough food to not starve. After 30 minutes the driver suddenly hits the breaks, reverses. What’s happening now? More problems with a vehicle? No, it’s a lion right next to the road. Everyone is excited, getting their phones out and taking pictures except us. We just stare. What an unexpected surprise. And I thought our wildlife time has finished. Half an hour later three giraffes block the road and another 30 minutes later three elephants don’t want to let us pass. In between these half an hour periods there are plenty of other animals to see. Even one wild dog or hyena crosses – we just pass too fast. The rest of the journey is uneventful and therefore we can sleep.
